Introducing Scott and the Por Larranaga Montecarlo

Video review introducing this cigar and new heretic Scott.
Keen to hear your thoughts about the Montecarlo - comment below.

30-45mn smoke.
Smoke it slowly it is a thin cigar - puffing too quick will overheat it and harshen the flavour.

Size: Deliciosos
Length 15.9cm. Ring gauge 33.
Strength: Light-bodied
Drink match: water, milk, tea - anything that doesn't overwhelm it.
From a box dated March 2009.

  1. Went out on a romantic date with Candice in the shitty weather of Auckland. Strangely it set a really nice mood on one of the east coast shore beaches. Back of the Volvo wagon gazing at the moonlit water; gazing into one another's eyes, smoking the larranaganaganaga. When asking Candice first impressions of the pre-lit cigar, she gave it careful thought then after some time responded to "mmm, it just smells like a cigar." But more time we both agreed on black pepper. Once lit, found it to be a pleasant mild tasting cigar from start to finish. A little on the fish-cheeks side with a semi tight draw and Candice giving most thoughts a comments of first third, "tastes of Africa." second third "kind of spicy" and last third "still really pleasant to smoke at the end." I should have read the post on this first because we did have port with it and found it to be a little over powering but at the same time this drink lubricates the mouth quite nicely :)

  2. I had this cigar with Jean-Pierre with whisky. In comparison to the gloria cubana we were smoking this one seemed more harsh and green, leafy, young. Kind of slightly Kava-ish in its complexion. Nicer with whisky that the mellower, darker, full bodied gloria though.

  3. i found one of these Por Larranaga Montecarlos at the bottom of my humidor and smoked it with Scott over coffee. it was vastly improved compared to my memories of it, still had a slight metallic hint early on but otherwise a nice fullish medium body of woodiness and a sweet tinge to it. MAR 09 was the box date so 3 years down the track, it found some maturity. Unusually it also seemed to go really well with the coffee (ie puff, mouthful of coffee, puff etc) as opposed to before or after it, it had enough body to stand up to it and a complimentary flavour...
