The Brown Trout Batch - Feb/Mar

one of the 2 we hooked & cooked that night
Back from a brilliant trip to Qtown/Invercargill and this is the batch i hurriedly selected the night before leaving. As promised, slightly fewer cigars to compensate for the extras in the last batch (the Esp#2 and Dip#4 were also v expensive due to duty). There is nothing brand new here, but three boxes from 2009 which should now be in their mature phase. Some new boxes should be here for the next batch thanks to Matt and his in-laws.

El Rey del Mundo - Demi Tasse: no need to re-introduce this wee fella. had one on the deck in the sun with a watered-down martini a couple weeks ago and it was pretty good.

Montecristo no. 4: El Clasico from our meaty Nov' 09 box. (cf. Spin review)

Diplomaticos no.4: the zingy peppery alternative from Jan'09, i thought i had none left until i discovered a few which i'd moved to the Monte box to make space. Hurray!

Montecristo Especiales no.2: These are very mild and require a pretty clean palate, plenty of attention, and slow smoking... Mar'09 box (cf. Joel's salad review or the AC/DC review)

Partagas Shorts - only for the Auckland boys who missed out last time.

  1. Thanks for the cf.s; helpful for me to start comparing the old and the new; something I want to start doing better-- e.g. Haldey has a book with all the rings from cigars he's smoked and actually notes how individual ones were, rather than just a type.

  4. [Ed.: Found this draft from last New Year's in Gisborne. Couldn't find a photo of the moment to make a good post. But here are the comments if you have a little El Rey del Mundo left... and also to commemorate a MOMENTOUS moment i had already forgotten - Bryony trying a cigar]

Had a ERDM demi-tasse over petanque last night. Brief but remarkably pleasant experience, there is now a richness to the cedar that warms the heart and the citrus zing complimented our lemon cake quite nicely. To my surprise my better half Bryony tried a couple of puffs - her first ever first hand smoking experience. She thought it tasted a bit leathery like a tack room (this apparently is the room where they store all the saddles bridles etc for the horses). I looked around but the only pigs flying were the cochonets getting lost in the evening twilight... (Greg started winning when it was established that none of us could actually see the target)
